CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH

(DAVENPORT, IOWA) - Master of Horror Stephen King has again given the green light for a selection of unreleased films based on his work to be screened for free as part of the Stephen King Rules Film Festival. The Barker Street Cinema team of Leah Coghlan, James Douglas, Norm Coyne, and Anthony Northrup will return to host the film festival this August as one of the headline attractions during the Alternating Currents Festival in Davenport, Iowa.

Alternating Currents is a free collaborative festival Aug. 18-21 taking place at more than 20 venues across Quad Cities downtowns, including Davenport, Rock Island and Moline. It will showcase more than 100 performances including film screenings, musical acts, comedy and art-related events. More than 60 national, regional and local acts of all sizes will perform over the four-day festival.

Now in its fifth year, Alternating Currents is organized by the Downtown Davenport Partnership (DDP), an affiliate of the Quad Cities Chamber, in collaboration with local talent across the region’s creative community.

Since 1977, the Master of Horror - Stephen King - has allowed emerging filmmakers to adapt his previously unproduced short stories into films that may help launch their careers through the Dollar Baby Deal. The Stephen King Rules Film Festival was developed by British Columbia production company Barker Street Cinema to showcase an exciting line-up of these independent movies, including interviews and panel discussions with the filmmakers. In 2018, Barker Street Cinema joined the Dollar Baby alumni with their own adaptation, The Doctor's Case, based on the Sherlock Holmes story written by King. The film won 15 awards at more than 40 film festivals and was reported by ScreenRant to be the fifth best Stephen King adaptation according to IMDB.

"We have seen first-hand the difference making a film that lives in Mr. King's orbit can make," said Douglas. "The fact that he has once again given us his blessing to host the festival in person and online and to be part of connecting these films to a global audience means the world to us."

All Alternating Currents events are free to attend. Visitors can travel from one venue to the next and attend indoor and outdoor events. In between performances, festival-goers can explore the walkable Downtown Quad Cities and experience restaurants, shops, bars and other venues.

“The Dollar Baby program aligns so well with our mission to highlight up and coming creatives, and we are thrilled to add this programming to the Alternating Currents Film Festival this year,” said Jason Gilliland, Event Director, Downtown Davenport Partnership. “This will be a fantastic opportunity to feature filmmakers and will be a popular attraction for festival goers.

Since in-person festivals were operating at a diminished capacity in 2021, King had granted Barker Street Cinema special permission to screen the festival to offer something for everyone to enjoy during isolation. The festival hosts were overwhelmed by the worldwide engagement and sense of community.

"We were blown away by the hundreds of comments stating that this online event helped them combat various issues ranging from mental health to even getting through chemotherapy," said Coghlan. "While we aren't in exactly the same situation as 2021, being able to broadcast online again will mean a lot to this fanbase."

In 2021 the film festival attracted tens of thousands of viewers from 28 countries. Since then, the team has added new elements to make the festival even more significant.

"Taking this show on the road means we have to level up," said Coyne. "We have some special surprises in store for Alternating Currents."

The Stephen King Rules festival will run Aug. 19-21 live at the Figge Art Museum. The films and filmmaker interviews will also be streamed on the Barker Street Cinema YouTube channel. Viewing in-person and  online is free.

Viewers can interact with the Stephen King Rules festival all weekend during a tweet along party at @stephenkingrlz using the hashtag #stephenkingrules.

DOLLAR BABY FILM FESTIVAL TO SCREEN UNRELEASED STEPHEN KING FILMS ONLINE FOR FREE

PRINCE GEORGE, BC, CANADA This April 23-25, a selection of Stephen King movies will be available to watch online for free. Hosted by Canadian film production company Barker Street Cinema, the virtual festival, called STEPHEN KING RULES, will screen 25 submissions by filmmakers from all over the world, many of which have never been seen by a global audience before.

Since 1977, the Master of Horror - Stephen King - has allowed emerging filmmakers to adapt his previously unproduced short stories into films that may help launch their careers through what is called the Dollar Baby Deal. Barker Street’s STEPHEN KING RULES Dollar Baby Film Festival will showcase an exciting line-up of these independent movies, including interviews and panel discussions with the filmmakers themselves.

Barker Street Cinema partners James Douglas and Norm Coyne will lead the festival three years after making their own Dollar Baby adaptation of King’s Sherlock Holmes mystery THE DOCTOR’S CASE, which will also screen at the festival. Douglas points to the film as the launch pad for his film career and the remarkable effect the program has had for so many.

"I can personally attest to the impact the Dollar Baby initiative has had on my career as a filmmaker,” Douglas said. “Being able to share these stories with the world in this manner is unbelievably profound.”

THE DOCTOR’S CASE has won 15 awards to date at more than 40 international festivals. The film stars Denise Crosby (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Pet Sematary), Michael Coleman (ABC’s Once Upon a Time) and William B. Davis (The X-Files’ Cigarette Smoking Man). During COVID isolation, Douglas and Coyne came up with the idea to offer some of their previously unreleased content for free online, a sentiment that they soon found was echoed by many other filmmakers. The Dollar Baby arrangement with Stephen King restricts releasing the films outside of film festivals and the films are rarely permitted to screen online. The two decided to “Hail Mary” the Master of Horror and, as luck would have it, King gave the festival his blessing.

“As storytellers, we were looking for ways to do our part to help provide an escape for people that wouldn’t cost them anything,” said Coyne. “The fact that James got the approval for an entire festival of stories from Stephen King himself is a total mind bender.”

The STEPHEN KING RULES Dollar Baby film festival is scheduled to take place April 23-35, 2021 and will be hosted on Barker Street Cinema’s private Vimeo channel. The three-day event will be co-hosted by author and Stephen King aficionado Anthony Northrup, who penned STEPHEN KING DOLLAR BABY: THE BOOK, media and design personality Leah Coghlan, and will feature special appearances by the likes of longtime Stephen King collaborator Bev Vincent (FLIGHT OR FRIGHT, THE DARK TOWER COMPANION) and others.
